 The History of Karate

Karate is a martial art that is known for its striking and kicking moves
as well as the deep and meaningful principles that are imbedded
in it and the art form has a very interesting history that dates back for centuries.
It was created through contact with other cultures and countries such as Okinawa,
China and Japan and is a mixture of both physical and mental skill.
It can be seen that along with knowing the techniques it is also possible to learn
where it came from and how it developed into an international sport.

 Origins of Karate

The origin of karate can be traced to the Ryukyu Kingdom which is now a part of Japan’s Okinawa prefecture.
In the 14th and 15th centuries Okinawa was experiencing a period of prosperity
as an important trading center between China, Japan and south-east Asia.
This contact also exposed Okinawans to Chinese martial arts especially
Kung Fu which played a vital role in shaping the fighting g systems of Okinawa.

The native fighting system of Okinawa called “Te” meaning “hand,”was a quite primitive but efficient form of defense.

It was after trade relations with China that Okinawan martial art masters integrated Chinese martial arts
in the practice of Te which would develop into what is known as karate.
This was further enhanced by the Shaolin Kung Fu the style known for its smoothness,
speed and strength and also commanding mental strength.
In the course of the seventeenth century, the Japanese Satsuma clan conquered Okinawa
and prohibited the residents of the island to possess weapons.
Due to this prohibition Okinawans were able to only use their legs to defend themselves
and this made them to enhance the development of Te.
Health care practitioners were trained in secret,
which they performed during the night so that they would not be discovered.
This period of secrecy and innovation can
be considered as the basis of what we know today as karate.
