The extensive attention to breathing techniques is one of the distinctive features of Goju-Ryu, being embedded in training and kata in full. Breathing is usually regarded as an auxiliary aspect in other forms of karate, in Goju-Ryu it is regarded as a fundamental practice principle. The breathing exercises will assist the practitioners to become stronger in their core, their postures and the effectiveness of their movements is optimized. More importantly, the appropriate breathing enhances concentration which makes sure that the students will remain calm and focused even when they are physically or mentally stressed. These breathing techniques conserve energy and allow endurance and prevent unnecessary fatigue in cases of prolonged practice or a real combat. Such focus indicates that Goju-Ryu focuses not merely on physical fight, but also in training the mind and body to work together against pressure.

Close-range Effectiveness and Self-defense.

Goju-Ryu is especially known as being effective in close-range fighting when compared to other forms of karate which tend to focus more on longer distance fighting. The system does not only include strikes, but also joint locks, throws, grappling and body manipulation. The factors render Goju-Ryu particularly applicable to self-defense situations in real-life where space can be limited and the confrontation can be unpredictable. Training on such a broad variety of techniques allows practitioners to be flexible, learning how to deal with situations in which opponents can move in closer or can overwhelm them by pure force. This pragmatism is guaranteed so that Goju-Ryu students do not just stick to strictly practiced moves but become all-round martial artists who can react to numerous dangers.

Kata, Symbolism in Goju-Ryu.

The katas or structured movement patterns of the style are not only training exercises of the technique- but the philosophy and soul of Goju-Ryu. Sanchin kata and similar focus on tension, stability, and controlled breathing, are the hard components of strength and endurance. Conversely, such kata as Tensho reveal the softness of streaming hand movements, circular defenses and flexibility. Training these forms can help a student learn to release explosive power accordingly when necessary, and still remain flexible, fluid, and conscious. With time, the practice of kata not only perfects technique, but also develops patience, discipline and concentration of mind. The combination of hard and soft in these patterns reflects the duality of the life itself- strength and flexibility.
